Newark’s Lincoln Park Music Festival Delivers the Best of Music, History and Green Living
Free Outdoor Music Concert To Welcome Over 50,000

NEWARK, NJ July 16, 2008 – The Lincoln Park Music Festival will rock the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) for the third year in a row. On Friday, July 25 an estimated 50,000 revelers are expected to attend the “Lincoln Park Music Festival: A Celebration of Spirit and Dance”.  Opening with a press conference held in Lincoln Park at 11am on Friday, July 25, the festival will feature concert performances by music legends such as James Moody, The Clark Sisters, and KRS One. Presented by LPCCD, the Lincoln Park Music Festival celebrates four genres of African American music: jazz, gospel, house and hip-hop. For general inquiries call 973-242-4144 or visit www.lpccd.org.

“The festival is an annual destination for thousands of music, dance, and art lovers from across the country,” explained Anthony Smith, Director of Community Affairs & Operations, LPCCD, and Executive Producer of Lincoln Park Music Festival. “People visit Lincoln Park to experience our eco urban arts district.

The free, four day festival is a Newark signature event, designed to revitalize the the Lincoln Park community. This year’s highlights include a two-day Jazz Series beginning Thursday, July 24, 5:30pm with the opening of “Music Speaks”, a jazz photography exhibit. The historic weekend will close with a Hip Hop Concert on Sunday, July 27 from noon – 8pm.

Brief Overview

  • Thursday, July 24 at 5:30pm is the opening of “Music Speaks” a jazz photography exhibition curated by Tony Graves featuring Andre Walker, Ronald Herard, and Robert Horne. The exhibit presents photographs of contemporary, classic and fusion jazz greats Jimmy Heath, Bobbi Humphries
    Wynton Marsalis and Chocolate, Arturo Sandoval, David Sandborn, Jonathan Butler, Richard Elliott and many others. The Opening Reception will be held at Washington Street Townhomes, 460 Washington St, Newark, NJ.
  • Friday, July 25 at 11am, a press conference will officially launch the festival. In honor of James Moody’s jazz legacy, the City of Newark will designate July 25, 2008 James Moody Day. Blue Note recording artist, Elisabeth Withers will perform “Moodys Mood for Love”.
  • From noon-5pm on July 25, the James Moody Quartet featuring Cyrus Chestnut, John Lee, and Dennis Mackrel headline an Afternoon of Jazz. Performances include the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Ensemble presenting a tribute to the late saxophonist-composer Johnny Hodges, TS Monk Band with special guest Alyson Williams, Grachan Moncur III, and a tap dance performance by Newark’s own Maurice Chestnut
  • Later on July 25, from 6pm – 9pm, an evening of high energy gospel takes stage with the
    Grammy winning Clark Sisters, Elisabeth Withers and Dawn Tallman.
  • On Saturday, July 26, noon – 9pm, a house music festival features Rochelle Fleming of First Choice, CeCe Rogers, DJs Joaquin “Joe” Claussell, Hippie Torrales, and a tribute to Sylvester performed by Marc Sir Dane, Susu Bobien, and Dawn Tallman.
  • The finale on Sunday, July 27, noon – 9pm, the 31st Anniversary of the Rock Steady Crew pays tribute to hip hop and performer Frosty Freeze with pioneers Crazy Legs, KRS-One, Marley Marl, Craig G and more.

In addition to music by internationally acclaimed artists, the Lincoln Park Music Festival has free events for all ages including athletic clinics for youth, an organic farmers market, international food, arts and crafts vendors, live artist painting exhibit, and the Green Sustainable Market Place sponsored by The Home Depot.
