Events to Watch in December:
December 2 – 8: National Handwashing Awareness Week
Spread the word, not the germs. Put up signs around the office and the bathrooms, alerting people of the need for health safety.
Help prevent the spread of germs. Bring bottles of hand-sanitizing liquid to schools in the community to help encourage children to get in the habit at an early age.
Partner with local free clinics or health organizations in your area to hand out pamphlets or informational packets on the importance of hand washing to prevent colds, the flu and germs.
December 4: 'Ending AIDS: Why the World Can't Wait and What You Can Do' public forum
Attend the forum, which is open to the public to find out how you and others can get involved at the grassroots level.
In recognition of this event and national awareness of AIDS and HIV prevention, organize a charity ball to raise funds for the cause.
Organize your own forum for your local area and invite local doctors, health professionals and educators to discuss what can be done within the community.
December 5: 2008 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year Nomination Deadline
Reach out to publicly or privately funded programs in your area to make sure they nominate someone within their organization.
Organize a Teacher of the Year nomination award for your local community or state.
December 6: Hearing on 'The Clean Water Restoration Act of 2007'
Organize a beach or lake cleanup to help support the act and do your part to keep the waters in your area from pollution.
Educate residents in your community on the importance of protecting our nation's waters and wetlands by inviting government supporters to speak.
Reach out to government officials to find out what you can do, or what they are doing, to protect waterways, including the streams and wetlands that feed and clean the nation's waters.
December 14: 30th Anniversary of Saturday Night Fever U.S. premiere
Get your groove on! Host a '70s dance party for disco fans of all ages to celebrate Saturday Night Fever – bellbottoms and platform shoes optional.
Sponsor a free movie night at the local theater to show a special viewing of the movie.
To help the spirit of dance stay alive...Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive...as The Bee Gees would say...organize a raffle where the winner will receive a copy of the movie DVD and a gift certificate for dance lessons.
December 15 – 31: 'Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.' National Crackdown.
To help be responsible, make sure everyone gets home safe from your company's or family's holiday party.
Take one for the team. Volunteer to be the designated driver at various holiday functions this year to keep the roads safer.
Invite a local law enforcement officer to speak at high schools or community events to stress the importance of driving safe this holiday.

Natasha Speaks:
Predicting the Future in News May Not Be Such a Losing Game Staying ahead of the trends in 2008 just got easier
The days of business professionals turning over the Magic 8 Ball to predict the events that will impact media coverage are not over – but the picture is getting clearer. It's no mystery that the media holds the power of coverage to thus create the awareness, knowledge, interest and intent that is needed to achieve desired results; but being able to forecast the news can make the difference in being a trendsetter or a follower.
The AP Planner, along with Editorial Calendars, has begun to shed light on the deep, mysterious pool of future news. According to Jeff Tidyman, senior vice president of Business Intelligence for eNR Services, Inc., those tools need to be taken advantage of if business professionals want to stay ahead of the trends in 2008.
"AP Planner is the only communications tool that provides a 12-month vista of upcoming events in dozens of verticals and industries. These events are giving users a chance to see what is going to be relevant to their business and newsworthy to journalists," Tidyman said. "It's opening doors for people to set the trends instead of trying to latch on down the road."
However, Tidyman adds that the usefulness of AP Planner goes beyond the interest of the media: it gives companies an inside look to business events that can impact and shape their industry and how it will be covered. "By knowing events in categories such as product launches, environmental news, economic indicators, or healthcare, communications professionals can formulate effective strategies that can set a precedent for 2008," Tidyman said.
It may put astrologers, psychics and tea-leaf readers out of business, but these forward-looking tools will make the future for companies using AP Planner a bit more bright.
