Events to Watch in October:

National Cookie Month

  • Future cookie monsters? Organize a bake sale to raise money to create a scholarship for a future culinary school student.

  • Host a Great Cookie Festival. Have local businesses participate by featuring different types and flavors of cookies where residents can stop in and learn about the baker and recipe origin.

  • Sponsor a cookie book party at the local library. Invite local residents to stop in and check out various cookie cookbooks and recipes, as well as children's books about cookies and books on the history of cookies – and offer samples for the kids!

  • Do you want a cookie? Visit a retirement community or day care center to spread the love of the sweet treat.

National Child Health Month

  • Keep your company employees informed! The Center for Disease Control and Prevention offers tips which can be posted around the office on how parents and family members can keep children healthy.

  • Health insurance plans being vetoed affect children's health. Conduct outreach programs in your community to sponsor children in need of immunizations and medicine.

  • Partner with UNICEF to provide financial support; research and development assistance; technical knowledge; access to logistic networks; and extensive communications channels.

October 10: SAVE (Stop America's Violence Everywhere) Today:

  • Raise awareness and support for victims of domestic abuse by organizing a walk to fight domestic violence; donate the proceeds to your area's domestic violence shelters and organizations.

  • Schools aren't immune from violence and bullying. Sponsor an event where local counselors can visit schools in the local area to educate the students about the signs, emotions and aid associated with violence and bullying.

October 14: Women's World Awards Gala in New York

  • Organize your own community's women's gala by recognizing the achievements and outstanding efforts of women in your area.

  • I am woman, hear me roar! Invite successful women from around the country to speak at event to address women's issues, success stories, business opportunities, etc. to women in the local area in recognition of the gala event.

October 21 – 27: National Forest Products Week:

  • Recognize the many products that come from our forests, the people who work in and manage our forests, the people who make the products, and how they all contribute to our lives.

  • Get your company, school, family involved! Come together to coordinate an initiative to clean up local forests and wooded areas or plant trees in the area's parks.

  • Educate the next generation. Teach children not to be wasteful of paper and appreciate all the items and resources that come from our forests. Forests play an irreplaceable part in the water cycle. The 200,000 leaves on a healthy 100-foot tree can take 11,000 gallons of water from the soil and "breathe" it into the air in a single growing season. The cooling effect of all that air is said to be the equivalent of air conditioning for 12 rooms.

Natasha Speaks:

'Tis the Season for Cause:
Let AP Planner help you plan ahead for your holiday cause initiatives

The fast-approaching holidays represent a myriad of connotations for us all. One of the themes most people associate with this time of year is "the season of giving." Beyond the obvious marketing ploy, companies are increasingly linking themselves to causes to reinforce corporate responsibility. However, with hundreds of organizations and events occurring, especially around the holidays, it's often overwhelming trying to align your organization with one.

"The key to creating a great cause-related initiative or promotion is research and planning ahead – that's where AP Planner comes in. With the holidays fast approaching, you don't want to wait until December to partner with an organization or create an initiative," said Jeff Tidyman, senior vice president of Business Intelligence for eNR Services, Inc.

For example, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Oreck Corp. is selling a special pink Oreck XL vacuum cleaner. For every one purchased through the end of the year, Oreck will donate $50 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

AP Planner allows users to look ahead – months in advance – to find out what organizations are highlighting their cause as awareness days or months, or when charities and organizations are planning events. AP Planner users can then plan out what cause-related and awareness events align best with their company.

Though companies are encouraged to stay committed to social issues throughout the year, the holidays are as good a time as any to get started.
